Jim Beam Repeal Batch Review

The Narrative:

For the 85th anniversary of Repeal Day, Jim Beam wanted to produce a bourbon tribute inspired by the whiskey they were making after the end of Prohibition. James B. Beam rebuilt their distillery by hand in just 120 days after the passage of the 21st amendment. This release is on the heels of Jim Beam’s successful limited run of Distiller’s Cut. Also offered non-chill filtered but bottled at 100 proof. This expression differs slightly from their standard bottling. Jim Beam Repeal Batch is non-chill filtered, bottled slightly higher at 86 proof and honors the style of bourbon the family produced in the 1930’s. The lack of chill filtering giving the bourbon a “fuller mouthfeel” according to JIm Beam Master Distiller Fred Noe.

"tastes hotter than its stated 86 proof label"

Jim Beam Repeal Batch Kentucky Straight Bourbon Review

Color:  Light Amber

Nose/Aroma: This is a nice nose! I get oak, vanilla, fruit/cherries, cinnamon with some pepper.

Palate/Body: On the first sip I am already liking this expression! I am definitely getting a fuller mouthfeel than the standard bottling. There is a spice to this bourbon that I am particularly fond of. A good amount of vanilla and some oak. This expression has a nice oily body.

Finish: It is a short to medium finish. I get oak, cinnamon, spice. It’s not a long lingering finish I’m used to and enjoy but it is nice!

Overall: I am pretty happy with this purchase! This expression is a worthy purchase for the price point. The biggest bonus is this expression tastes slightly hotter than its stated 86 proof label. That could be from the lack of chill filtering that leaves some added character to this whiskey. I was impressed previously with the Distiller’s Cut release. I haven’t put up a review of that but after tasting this I will work on that next. Maybe even do a head-to-head battle for comparison. I continue to believe straight from the barrel is the best form to taste whiskey. Short of that; a bourbon without chill filtration or any other process that removes some of the character from the whiskey will be the next best bet!

Have you tried this particular expression? What did you think?

How did it compare to Distiller’s Cut?
