Smooth Ambler Big Level Wheated Bourbon Review

The Narrative:

It is mentioned on their website that the founding of the distillery could arguably be traced to a TIME magazine article. The article in question appeared in a January 2008 issue and featured a discussion on the re-emergence of craft distilling in the United States. So in 2009 Smooth Ambler Spirits Co. was founded by TAG Galyean and John Little. Both had wanted to make something that they and the surrounding Greenbrier Valley community could be proud of. Smooth Ambler Spirits has set out to produce fine artisan spirits by combining patient Appalachian know-how with the finest of American ingredients. Located in the rural Greenbrier Valley of West Virginia, Smooth Ambler uses state-of-the-art distillery equipment in conjunction with the natural resources of the region; high-valley mountain air, natural mountain waters, ideal temperature variations and friendly folks. Smooth Ambler is known as much for its premium taste products as it is for local West Virginia pride. The distillery just recently completed an expansion and is positioned to produce 3,000 barrels of whiskey this year. The distillery will also continue to source quality whiskey when it becomes available.

Commenting on ‘Big Level’ Head Distiller and CEO John Little had this to say.

“Much of what we’ve done at Smooth Ambler has been leading up to this moment, The release of Big Level signifies the beginning of our long-term ability to offer a third, important category of whiskeys to us: those which are 100% made here in West Virginia. We’re excited for this whiskey to complement the merchant bottled and “married” (merchant and homemade blended together) families already embraced by our business.”

"a sweet honey, caramel, burnt sugar creme brûlée aroma"

Smooth Ambler Big Level Wheated Bourbon Review

Color:  Dark Amber

Nose/Aroma: This has a unique nose from other wheated bourbons I have had. Initially there is a sweet honey, caramel, burnt sugar creme brûlée aroma. On the second nose there are notes of toffee, toasted oak, some dark fruit and nuts.

Palate/Body: This is a youthful spirit with rich sweet flavors of cinnamon, brown sugar, vanilla, and nuts. Good amount of heat on the palate. A light to medium body with decent legs around the glass.

Finish: A spice lingering dry finish of medium length with caramel, tobacco and pecan pie.

Overall:  I was glad to get this so soon after passing up an overpriced bottle of it over a week ago. Definitely happy with where the proof was on this expression as professed in my last review. I can’t help but wonder what it would have been like with just a few more points at 107. But, I”m always after just a little more ABV where I can get it. I wouldn’t necessarily compare this to any other wheated bourbons. With the few that are on the market regularly it is great to have a new offering in the space, even if it is a limited release. You can see what future releases of this expression or another wheated bourbon from them will be like in the future. And it can only get better with time. I continue to be excited for what Smooth Ambler spirits will produce and bring to market.

UPDATE - 01.24.2020:

After sampling this expression recently I cannot recommend anymore. I’m having trouble recalling the flavors I had in my original review. The additional time and air in the bottle has not improved this whiskeys character. This bottle definitely tasted best right after the cork was popped.

Have you tried this particular expression? What did you think?
